Position Overview

The Public Safety Help Desk Technician role in IXP is to support the operations of the 911 Communications Center and IT department within the City of Danbury’s Public Safety sector. The position will help plan, coordinate, direct and design IT-related activities, as well as provide administrative support for daily operational activities of the IT department. This employee will work closely with the Public Safety Systems Manager to assist with the identification, recommendation, development, implementation and support of cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of Public Safety. This position will also assist in defining and implementing IT policies, procedures and best practices. 

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Provide level 1, 2, and 2.5 support for deployment, monitoring, development, and maintenance of all Public Safety IT systems, including desktop PCs, mobile data terminals, operating systems, hardware, and software through the Help-Desk. This includes traveling up to 10 miles to out of office territories to provide support.
  • Communicate and work with Public Safety technology vendors on a regular basis to be sure all contracted hardware and software is maintained and supported properly.
  • Support the City of Danbury’s Computer Aided Dispatch software within the Public Safety sector as a System Administrator for all support related requests.
  • Be available 24/7 for emergency on call related support requests.
  • Keep current with the latest technologies.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of IT policies and procedures, including those for architecture, security, disaster recovery, standards, purchasing and service provision. 
  • Practice asset management for IT hardware, software and equipment. 
  • Other reasonably related duties may be assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems etc.)
  • Two to Four years of related technical work experience. 
  • Strong technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems. 
  • Strong technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols and standards. 
  • Active Directory, Group Policy, and CAD Software experience 
  • Experience in IT infrastructure planning and development. 
  • Excellent understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives. 
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws. 
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills. 
  • Ability to work without direction or guidance.
  • Ability to conduct research into IT issues and products as required. 
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language. 
  • Strong analytical, evaluative and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. 
  • Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Physical Demands
  • Sitting for extended periods of time while working at computer keyboards, monitoring a variety of public safety communications systems and completing documentation required of operations. 
  • Must be able to get up and sit down effectively.
  • Vision, specifically to include up close, distance, color and peripheral; depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to climb into confined spaces, including police vehicles on a regular basis. 
  • Must be able to work in close proximity to large dogs, specifically police K9’s. 
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information with public safety personnel and vendors.
  • Must be able to travel with reliable transportation within a 10-mile radius during business hours
  • Must be able to work during 24/7 emergency conditions possibly with little sleep.
  • Must be able to work with sensitive confidential information.

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
