iXP Recommends Program to Enhance Overall Campus Safety for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Situation

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is taking pro-active measures to improve the safety and security of its campus. As such, iXP was contracted to assess the campus and review public safety and security operations, systems, equipment, infrastructure, and the ability to enhance, upgrade, re-design, and implement enhanced solutions.

The goal of engaging iXP was to obtain an independent expert evaluation of the Public Safety Department's legacy environment and operations and to develop an initial strategy and outline for a business case to utilize public safety and security technologies to increase the safety and security of the Rensselaer Campus. The Rensselaer Executive Leadership evaluated first hand some of iXP's client operations. Based on that positive evaluation, references, and demonstrated expertise, iXP was contracted to provide professional services in the area of public safety and security consulting.

Solution

iXP focused on three fundamental areas: operations, technologies, and facilities. The assessment established a baseline on how the Public Safety Department utilizes its existing communication technology and operational facility to support the service levels required by Rensselaer. This information helped determine functional and performance requirements, the best possible utilization of existing technology, systems, resources, and the available space to facilitate the design of a new Communications Center. Additionally, the assessment produced recommendations regarding new technology and solutions that Rensselaer can employ to increase the efficiency of the operations of the Public Safety Department.

iXP examined the current technologies in use in the Communications Center (CAD, RMS, Access Control, CCTV, Alarms, Radio, etc.). We also examined the campus and CCTV environment for its existing locations, recommended changes and the possible use of Smart-CCTV technology.

Results

The assessment of the Department of Public Safety identified critical areas in need of improvement and provided recommendations to enhance overall campus safety. iXP also provided findings and offered recommendations for best-in-class solutions for numerous aspects of the Department of Public Safety infrastructure and operations. We reviewed current processes, procedures, and workload and then worked to help Rensselaer prioritize the recommendations.
